Mary Lou Haney Dodson of Rockwall, TX, passed away December 27, 2020. She was born May 27, 1929, in McKinney, TX, to James Riley and Mable (Holbert) Haney. Mary Lou grew up in McKinney but became a longtime Royse City resident in the 1950’s. She remained in Royse City until 2013 when she moved to Brookdale Summer Ridge and Highland Meadows in Rockwall. Mary Lou was a teacher for the Community Independent School District in Nevada, TX, until 2000, when she retired after a 29-year career of teaching Title I and Fifth Grade Social Studies and Reading. She loved teaching and her students. Her students thought she was a walking history book when recounting experiences from her own lifetime that made what she was teaching come to life. She was a good storyteller. Mary Lou had a great sense of humor, full of wit and a way with words. She enjoyed making those around her laugh, often pulling pranks, telling jokes and funny stories. She was a generous person, gracious host, impeccable dresser, and could decorate a home better than most interior designers. Mary Lou was a talented pianist and would often play in the evenings by the light of a hanging gold chandelier. Mary Lou is preceded in death by her parents James Riley and Mable Haney, brother James Louis Haney, sister-in-law Nell Sene Haney, and niece Trudy Dorris. She is survived by her daughter Le Anne Dodson and fiancé Clyde Schilling of Rockwall, Le Anne’s dad Glynn Dodson, nephew Pat Haney and wife Kay of Tunica, MS, first cousin Judy Hamilton and husband Jerry of Edmond, OK, and great nephews and nieces. Funeral services will be held 1:00 pm Saturday, January 2, 2021, at Rest Haven Funeral Home – Rowlett Location. Interment will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery. The family will gather with friends at the funeral home prior to the service beginning at 11:30 am. Please remember Mary Lou today by remembering her wit and great sense of humor.
